This tradition of blessing the doorways (with blessed chalk) symbolizes the family's commitment to welcome Christ into their homes on a daily basis throughout the year. (Chalk that is blessed should be buried after used and not used for ordinary purposes.)
The Epiphany Blessing of a Home
Leader: Peace be to this house!
All: And all who enter!
Leader: The Magi came from the East to worship the Lord Jesus.
All: And gave him precious gifts.
Leader: They presented him with gold symbolic of his Kingship; frankincense to proclaim him God; and myrrh for his burial.
Reader: Reader reads Luke 1:46-55 (The Magnificat)
All: Our Father, who art in Heaven...
Leader: Gracious God, you revealed your Son to the nations by the brilliant star. Lead us to our eternal home through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.
With chalk, the leader makes the inscription on the lintel (above the door).
